A donation from Ontario Power Generation has helped fund a new state-of-the-art ultrasound machine that will be used to help doctors at the Cornwall Community Hospital. Among its many applications, the ultrasound will help identify life-threatening injuries and rule out complications in early pregnancy.

“The new bedside machine won’t replace the ultrasound services provided in other departments but will help us improve response time to those who need it most in emergency situations,” said Dr. Geoff Heseltine of the Cornwall Emergency Department. “We’ll use bedside ultrasound to identify life-threatening abdominal abnormalities like aneurysms or injuries normally associated with trauma, or rule out other medical complications such as those that might occur in early pregnancy,” he added.

In addition to other “new” equipment purchases made possible by community and corporate donations to the Foundation, the portable ultrasound machine (which cost $55,940) will help the CCH continue to deliver care to the approximately 55,000 patients who come through its doors each year; a number roughly equivalent to that of the Montreal General or Ottawa Civic Hospital.

“The purchase of the ultrasound machine is a perfect example of what we can accomplish by ‘working together’ because half the money came from Ontario Power Generation and the other half from community donors,” said Roy Perkins, Chair of the Cornwall Community Hospital Foundation.

Ontario Power Generation Inc. is an Ontario-based company whose principal business is the safe and environmentally responsible generation and sale of electricity in Ontario.
