Cornwall Community Hospital Surgeons have much to be thankful for with the recent contribution of $120,000 toward the purchase of a Flexible Endoscopy Video System and Videoscopes. The $240,000 system, which will replace existing, aging equipment, is used to diagnose conditions that affect the esophagus, stomach and beginning of the small intestines. With surgeons performing more than 9600 surgeries in 2007/08, such equipment is essential to todays surgical techniques. Dr. R. Menon, Chief of Surgery commented, This is a very necessary piece of equipment which is used all the time. Dr. W. Moussa, surgeon added, I feel quite positive about having this new Olympus scope, specifically with its interchangeability with equipment at our Second Street site and with its potential for use for larascopic surgery.

Doctors and patients alike are proud of their community for making this purchase possible. Funding for this new equipment is a direct result of the second annual Corus Caring Hearts Radiothon and ultimately the hundreds of donors who answered the call for pledges. A total of $120,226.21 was raised on April 9th, 2008 in response to the Hospital Equipment Appeal. Corus Entertainments General Manager, Scott Armstrong said, Hopefully, this is the first example of how the Corus Caring Hearts Radiothon can help in continuing to provide the equipment that is so needed for better healthcare.

Most people dont know that our government does not fund the total cost of equipment for hospitals. With the community coming through with donations to the Radiothon, purchases such as this one are becoming a reality. Some community groups are already hard at work raising funds to be donated to the next Radiothon on March 18th, 2009. Roy Perkins, Chair of the Cornwall Community Hospital Foundation who was on hand to view the new system commented, We owe our thanks to the donors, including our media partners, for their support. In this case Corus Caring Hearts Radiothon is a good example of what can happen when we all work together. It makes a huge difference in filling the hospitals equipment needs.
