SMILE -‘It Takes a Village’!
Carol White
It’s amazing what can happen when ‘a village’ decides to meet a need.
In this picture, local Tim Hortons owners Darryn McPhail (West district) and Nelson Matos (East District) recently watched doctors and staff as they happily trained on this new ventilator.

Scene 1 -Cornwall Community Hospital Pediatricians recently approached Dr. Rachel Navaneelan and Rachel’s Kids Board Member, Dr. Turcotte in the hopes Rachel’s Kids would fund one of this year’s urgent Capital needs, a $20,000 Si-Pap Ventilator. This new hi-tech piece of equipment provides gentle, effective, non-invasive ventilating support to neo-natal babies.
Scene 2 - Dr. Navaneelan approached Connie Vardy, Executive Director, Cornwall Community Hospital Foundation because Rachel’s Kids and its Board had a vision of their own – they wanted to take on a big project and give a much needed face lift to the Pediatric Unit at the Hospital. Connie assured Dr. Navaneelan she would find donors to meet the Si-Pap Ventilator need while Rachel’s Kids carried on with their refurbishing project. (Stay tuned for more news and photos on this great project.)
Enter, Tim Hortons and Smiles Cookies - Franchise owners the Hill and Moyer families, Corporate Tim Hortons, and our Community. 2009 Smiles Cookie Campaign raised $13,169 thanks to the purchase of these smiley-faced cookies by our community- $3,000 of the funds was directed to complete the Tim Horton Corporate Pledge of $50,000 to the Our Hospital Our Future Campaign. The balance of the cookie sales, over $10,000 went toward the Si-Pap Ventilator. Then, because of donors who answered a call to donate to in the Foundation’s 2009 Christmas Appeal directed their gifts to the Foundation’s “Greatest Priority”, the Smiles $10,000 donation was matched making $20,000 available to buy the Si-Pap ventilator.
The final scene shows smiling faces knowing ‘the village’ gave and the need was met! Many thanks to all!
