Philanthropy – how many teens do you know that actually understand the meaning of this word? Le Club Octogone – the youth group formed and supported by Club Optimiste de la Région de Cornwall, definitely understands and has been raising funds to promote the happiness and well-being of fellow teens.
As part of an $8,000 pledge made in 2008, these Grade 9 to 12 philanthropists have been fundraising throughout the community to create a "teen room" at Cornwall Community Hospital so families and teens can enjoy a dedicated hospital waiting area. The group has now reached the halfway point in their pledge with their latest donation of $1,000. Furniture has been received and is waiting for installation in the new Teen Room along with a mural – designed and painted by Club members. When current construction in Pediatrics is finished, this new teen room will be complemented with a plasma television, a new video game console and an art table – all provided for with funds raised by teens for teens.
Le Club Octogone currently has 125 members with representatives from all local high schools and offers students an opportunity to earn volunteer hours needed to graduate. The group raises funds through community projects and activities such as Christmas gift wrapping at local shopping malls, helping out at dances and more.
